Christina Reekie
Photography Emphasis

I received my first camera when I was 8 years old, it was a 35 mm Pentax k1000 and it became one of my most precious possessions; however, I didn’t think about art as a profession until after I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. It was in that moment I decided to be happy, to make happiness and to spend my life exactly the way I wanted. I started traveling to all the places I had always dreamed of, living off only what was needed, experiencing the world one day at a time and brought my camera along for the ride.

The body of work entitled "Memory" explores how memories become distorted, faded, warped and disintegrated in time. We tend to shape memories according to how our brains want to remember them and not according to actual events. This was especially problematic in my family because there were situations of our lives that were confidential and could not be spoken of and others that were just too painful. This body of work is about memories forgotten in time, where only fragments remain as distorted shadows. The initial imagery for this series are negatives taken by my father. Through the process of painting, selective development and bleaching, I alter the photographs in an attempt to reveal a deeper truth.

For my “Travel the World in a Grain of Salt” postcard series, I collect salt water from around the world to investigate how the mineral makeup, found in water, reacts with the silver nitrate in my salt printed photographs. Postcards have always served as a quick note or thought from their sender--a reminder of someone’s absence. There is a perceived monetary cheapness to them while holding a deeper emotional value and importance. With the help of connections from my travels as well as from family abroad, I have been gathering water since July 2015 and create postcards in the darkroom. I want my salt printed postcards to extend beyond their traditional context; I want them to be a literal representation of "wanderlust", allowing the viewer to travel the world with me through my work.

In my life I have been lucky enough to experience many life-changing events and travel the world. Due to these adventures I have observed the strange things a brain is capable of seeing, believing, as well as the memories it can create.
